Working in Partnership to Reduce Single Use Plastics

On Tuesday 26 March 2019, Mole Valley District Council’s Cabinet will be asked to consider a report recommending that the ‘Single Use Plastic Strategy for Surrey’ is adopted and that the Council works towards implementing objectives set out in the strategy’s five-year plan.

Each Surrey local authority recognises the need to tackle avoidable plastic waste and the Surrey Waste Partnership (SWP)* has developed a strategy which focusses on reducing levels of single use plastic across Surrey. Single use, otherwise known as disposable plastic items such as carrier bags, straws, cutlery and most food packaging, are intended to be used once before being thrown away or recycled.

The SWP’s Single Use Plastic Strategy for Surrey sets out key objectives for every Surrey local authority to consider as part of a collaborative approach which, it is hoped, in time will help achieve the wider aspiration of Surrey becoming a single use plastic-free county. The objectives focus on each partner authority taking responsibility and no longer using single use plastics in their workplace, in addition to encouraging and supporting partners, residents and businesses to do the same.

Councillor Patricia Wiltshire, Mole Valley District Council Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: “Mole Valley’s residents and businesses are excellent at recycling and have helped us achieve the third highest recycling rate in Surrey and 13th in the county – of which we are very proud. Together, we can do more, and Surrey Waste Partnership identifying single use plastics as the environmental scourge that they are is an encouraging start.

“There will be a lot of work ahead of us for Surrey to become a single use plastic-free county but, with your help to achieve this, it can be done. Even before SWP’s strategy was announced, MVDC’s Cabinet was aware of the environmental impact this plastic waste could cause and has agreed that water bottle refill stations should be installed in Dorking and Leatherhead to encourage residents, businesses and visitors to the town centres to top up when out and about”.
